Halliday, they studied the effect of a pharmacological doses of testosterone enanthate (3 mg.kg-1.wk-1 for 12 wk) on muscle mass and total-body potassium as well as whole-body and muscle protein synthesis in normal male test subjects. Participants who received testosterone exhibited a 27% increase in muscle protein synthesis, providing a clear biological explanation for testosterone's muscle-building effects.

However, testosterone's impact extends beyond younger men. A 2008 study published in JAMA investigated TRT in older men with low testosterone levels.
